The Pride of Northside isn't just a marching band, it's a family. This family of mine has inspired me to be the best that I can be and has supported me in reaching my goals. It has overall made me a more open person and less shy. Marching band has taught me how to have fun while working, to build lasting relationships, and to take pride in who I am. We all support each other and allow you to be who you truly are. I must say that I feel so lucky to take part of such an organization. Being in marching band is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And let me tell you, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.
By: Morgan Givens (Freshman Trumpet Player) I have a million things to be thankful for, but I have to say that today, The Northside High School Marching Band is on my mind. The Northside band has provided me with so many people I love, including my best friend and boyfriend of over 3 years (we met at band camp, how romaaantic). Because of this organization, I am constantly surrounded by so many loving people that brighten every single one of my days. It gave me the opportunity to attend Front Camp, where I learned some... of the greatest lessons of my life. The band and its members have made me the friend, musician, leader, and person I am today. I have been taught perseverance, patience, determination, motivation, pride, accomplishment, respect, discipline, leadership, and so much more from this band. I still cannot believe that this is my last year with you. I am so blessed and lucky to have had the opportunity to serve you all as a member, a section leader, and finally a drum major. Thank you, everyone who contributes to this organization, for providing me with something so magical. By: Haley Blevins (Drum Major) Post by: Allee Burzanko

Our last competition didn’t go exactly in our favor awards wise. But, all that really mattered to us was that Mr. Galyen and the rest of the staff were proud of us. Abbie and Haley received 1st place in drum major! We have been so happy to have such great drum majors this year! Our drum line received 2nd place! They have grown into such an amazing drum line throughout the season. The band received 3rd in marching, 4th in guard and general effect and music! Regardless of the rankings we were all just happy to be there with each other and lucky to have the opportunity to be at each game and competition this year. The whole ride home the band couldn't stop smiling. Mainly because of how proud Galyen was of us. After we came off the field from performing her gave us a little speech of how awesome we did. The speech helped us with any negative thoughts that one of us could've had. Although, the band isn't finished with performing quite yet, we are done with competitions. This has been a great season! Each person in the band has made so many memories and friendships this season. One's that we will never forget! A few weeks ago was the Viking Pink Out game for the year; as always, the band wore the bright pink bandannas in support for everyone out there fighting breast cancer. Sine it had been raining for the majority of the day, no uniforms were worn and it's a good thing we decided against them. When we took the field for our halftime show everything started out great, up until the sky broke out in a short downpour; everyone was rushed off the field trying to protect their instruments at all costs. For the rest of the game clarinets and flutes were hidden under ponchos, but the sections still had the time of their life singing their parts or lyrics to our songs! The game ended with everyone soaking wet and Northside winning 44-13 against William Fleming. The following morning we loaded up to head to Princeton, WV, riding comfortably on charter buses- thanks to Mr. Dent! It was colder than we were used to, but we stayed and watched a few bands and filled ourselves to the brim with hot chocolate before heading back to the buses to get ready. Our band came 3rd in our class in marching, music, drumline, general effect, and our wonderful drum majors placed 2nd in the 4A class! Congrats to everyone in the band on all their hard work to get this far! By- Sarah Grubb The Pride has been working super hard on marching, music, and visuals. Everyone is so spirited and willing to learn so many new things. We had middle school night which was awesome as usual! It's so cool to see the people that will hopefully be joining band when they come to high school! We also have had quite a few games which gave the new and old members some great memories. We had our first competition of the 2014-2015 season this past Saturday, Sept. 27th at Northside in which we placed 1st in Drum Major, Drumline, Marching, Music, & General Effect. We also placed 2nd in Colorguard! Galyen also received Favorite Director (because, he's awesome.) Sorry it's been so long! But, this was just a quick wrap-up. Also below is a small story from sophomore Annabell Knapp from her first performance! My first show I wasn't that nervous due to all the practice, we had done. I preformed as I thought I would but at one part when i hit my head with the rifle. Besides that I believed I preformed well. The best part of the game was being in the stands, I enjoy color guard very much. I hope to be captain next year! Freshman marchers were fitted for uniforms today so all the marching that was done was marching the 4 sets! We leave for camp tomorrow morning at 9, be at the school by 8:15 to get everything loaded on to the buses. This will be the last blog until band camp is over! All the pictures that were taken today are of Drumline and Colorguard! Here's to a great band camp and a great season! By- Allee Burzanko
Well, day 4 has been completed! Everyone is doing such a great job! The band is starting to have a big full sound which is awesome!! Today freshman marchers learned how "rock n' roll" which is going from marching forwards to backward. They also marched while turning and they even did some flanks! Tomorrow, July 26th section members will test on "Wish you were here" and section leaders will test on "Owner of a Lonely Heart/Spirit of Radio". It's so exciting to see the band already forming into a family, i can tell it's going to be a great season regardless of the score every Friday night! WHO IS EXCITED FOR BAND CAMP?!

With the third day of pre-camp over and done with it’s amazing to see how much every band member has grown in such a short time, especially all the freshman marchers. After reviewing all they had learned the past two nights the freshman finally got the tutorial on backwards marching! Although there were some wobbly bodies that probably neared falling over not one backed down from the challenge. Today also marked day three of tests for section leaders, being tested on “Wish You Were Here,” and day two for the section members testing on the “Renegade/Karn Evil 9” mix. Retesting for our first piece went on as the band ventured outside and hopefully ended with a nearly perfect percentage of passes. To those who just couldn’t get those few measures on our second piece, or even retesting on our first, just keep practicing hard and don’t give up, you'll get it next time!! Also, a big thanks goes out to our uniform managers and all the bands moms for making sure we all have uniforms that fit properly! Who knows what we'd do without you guys! More pictures from today and even a few from yesterday are located under the "read more." By- Sarah Grubb
July 23, 2014 Day 2 has been completed! The freshman marchers learned how to; mark time, march (with and without horns), & they also played the Bb scale while marching! Sections tested on "Limelight" today and will test on "Renegade/Karn Evil 9" tomorrow Thursday, July 24th. Uniform managers organized uniforms and taught each other how the system works. They also fitted 4th year marchers today & 3rd year marchers will be fitted tomorrow July 24th. Congratulations to Katelyn Crowe, Ben Mays, Tiffany Davis, Michael Alachnowicz, Michael Barbour, and Jazmine Muscare for getting the solos/trios today! July 22, 2014! Today was the first day of pre-camp! The new marchers did an awesome job; they worked on their right, left, & about turns. They also were called to attention and did it loud and proud! We worked on the first tune, which section members will play memorized on Wednesday. Sarah and I (Allee) are so excited to start this upcoming season and of course picture every possible moment we can! By- Allee Burzanko
The Vikings won their second state championship, one in 2009 and now in 2013!! The game was against James Monroe at Liberty University's Williams Stadium and was a win for Northside 24-10. The game was a great way to conclude the season, although it was freezing! We marched the show with ponchos and I think most of us were convinced our hands were frozen. I hope the seniors had a fantastic year to wrap up their high school marching band experience, and we wish them the best of luck in the world! |
